Verdi’s tragic story of joy, sorrow, passion, regret and undying loyalty is grippingly told in Kit Hesketh-Harvey’s new adaptation.

Kit Hesketh Harvey is largely known for his work in cabaret and his regular panel appearances on Radio 4’s Just A Minute. Meanwhile his operatic translations have been performed by the Royal Opera House, ENO, Sydney Opera, Scottish Opera and Opera North. Last year he directed the Merry Opera Company’s widely acclaimed production of Offenbach's La Belle Hélène ('Troy Boy')

About The Merry Opera Company

Some people love opera, others have difficulty finding a way in. The Merry Opera Company was set up specifically to delight opera fans and to open a door for newcomers. Moreover, their founder was fed up with falling asleep during the first act of every opera he saw. He is delighted to say that he has not slept for one moment during any of Merry Opera's 120+ performances.
Since 2007, they have been a leading light in producing operas throughout southern England and in Central London. Merry Opera has staged performances in major town theatres, a pub, a school, open-air amphitheatres, churches, shops and the street. A headless ghost, a panto cow and a talent contest are all included in this wacky pantomime written by Rod Dexter. Will the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham succeed in his plan to kidnap and marry Maid Marion? Will the Knights of the Occasional Table show their mettle or do a bit of crocheting instead? How many pies will Friar Tuck eat? Find out the answers to these and many other important questions by coming to see “Robin Hood” at the Sarah Thorne Memorial Theatre. If you love all the tradition of British pantomime, then this is the show to see; Oh yes it is! “

People who saw the memorable film “The Kings Speech” will have an opportunity to meet Bill Pepper, a world authority on voice training, the Voice Coach who trained Geoffrey Rush (also Kate Blanchett and Russell Crowe) when he holds a one day Master Class at the Sarah Thorne Theatre Club, Hilderstone, Broadstairs. Entitled “Freeing Your Voice – Training for Performance”, the one day Masterclass will assist actors, teachers, presenters, announcers and lecturers to explore and develop the full potential of their voice. This is a “one off” Master Class as Bill Pepper is over from Australia on a short trip. The class will be held at the Memorial Theatre, Hilderstone, on Tuesday 13^th December from 10am to 4pm.

FESTIVE FRIVOLITIES & DIVERTISEMENTS

Following two successful years at Sarah Thorne, the Festive Frivolities team are back with another fabulous evening of songs, sketches and divertisements to prepare you for the Christmas Season. Featuring favourites such as Bill Harris, Steven Todd, Lisa Payne and hosted by Jane Wenham-Jones, the evening offers the chance to step back into the world of ‘supper club’ entertainment and guests are invited to bring a buffet to enjoy at the table. This year Festive Frivolities are starting earlier than usual due to the packed rehearsal schedule for the Sarah Thorne’s very own Pantomime, SCROOGE. Last years Festive Frivolities raised over £250 for local charities and this year the team have chosen Thanet Animal Group – a local pet rescue centre - to benefit, which organiser Lisa Payne volunteers.

Super Sleuth residents of Thanet are invited to come and help solve a dastardly murder as Sarah Thorne host another of it’s sell out Murder Mystery Evenings hosted by The Perfectly Dreadful Murder Company. This time we travel back to the Victorian era joining Lady D’mort as she hosts a most exciting evening, where we will attempt to discover whether the after life exists! But someone will be finding out for themselves as they fall prey to a character with murder on their mind!

As with previous nights, there will be a host of weird and wonderful suspects for you to interview, and deduce who is the perpertrator of this most foul crime.

Cast includes two local authors, Jane Wenham-Jones and Matthew Munson, from the page to the stage!.

With prizes for the best fancy dress for the detective team that can solve the dreadful deed! Bring a buffet to enjoy. Fully licensed bar available.

Wizard of Oz

“The Wizard of Oz”

The Sarah Thorne Junior Drama Group presents a dramatised version of the “Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum.

“Dorothy thinks she’s lost forever when a tornado whirls her from her home in Kansas into a magical world. To get home, she must find the wonderful Wizard in the Emerald City. On the way she meets some new friends, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion. The Wicked Witch of the West however, is less friendly and has her own plans for Dorothy.

The performers are aged between 10 and 16 and rehearse on Friday evenings at the Memorial Theatre, Hilderstone, Broadstairs. This will be the 11^th production the group have performed at the Memorial Theatre under the Direction of Kim Bourne. The performances that confused the Blackpool Showzam bookers: for the Ballroom, or the end of the pier? In the end they put Iestyn in both.

As heard by Her Majesty, and on Desert Island Discs, Midweek, Woman’s Hour and Loose Ends, part one is a musical revue. Hearing along the way songs by Richard Rodgers, Shermann and Shermann, Cole Porter, Ivor Novello et al, we follow Iestyn in his tutu on Combined Services Entertainment tours through Iraq and Afghanistan in the company of Her Majesty’s Finest. Hoiked onto the “Naughty Tank” on base in Iraq for being lippy to Royal Marines Commando ‘Stacks’, Iestyn had to sing for his supper – or at least to be lifted down again.

Thanet Writers Awards Night

An Evening of Literature in Performance - hosted by Inscribing the Island Literature Festival.

The Sarah Thorne Theatre hosts an evening of literature performances by some of the best voices in Kent on Friday 7th October. Kent poets Caroline Price, Clive Eastwood, Mark Holihan, Maggie Harris, Vicky Wilson, Sally Minogue and Felicity Brookesmith headline an evening which will also include readers by some of the Thanet writers who submitted entries to the THANET WRITE writing competition. Five young Thanet writers are also included in the evening's entertainment - Anna Harvey, Caroline Pearson, Priya Hawthorne, Lydia Crosher and Katherine Setterfield, whose ages range from 13-17 entered the competition to express their views on Thanet through poetry, judged by Caroline Price and Clive Eastwood of the Kent and Sussex Poetry Society. Prose writers are not left out, international writer Jacob Ross selected the winning short story which will be read out on the evening. The evening also includes a presentation of DAUGHTERS, a poetry, music and dance performance which is featured in this years' Canterbury Festival. and includes singing and dance by Aimee Watmore, with musical accompaniment by Cathy Richards. Broadstairs poet Mark Holihan, American by birth, was commissioned by Inscribing the Island to write new poems on his perspective of Thanet, which he will be launching on the evening. Inscribing the Island Literature was created by writer Maggie Harris to encourage and develop literature in Thanet, and is run with help from a small body of dedicated helpers. The festival has received no funding from either local or national bodies and has only been able to run this event by a donation for the hire of the theatre by a local writer, and by running raffles over the past year. Tickets are £6 and £4 concessions from the theatre.

Dick Barton, hero of the BBC’s 1940s radio serial is back in an action packed adventure. Inscribing the Island Literature presents an exciting evening to find the Thanet Writer of the Year, with guest writers & judges Caroline Price, Clive Eastwood and Jacob Ross. Also, the Broadstairs launch of a special poetry, music and dance collaboration: Daughters, with Frances Knight, Vicky Wilson, Maggie Harris, Felicity Brookesmith, Cathy Richards and Aimee Watmore.
