La Traviata

Saturday 10th March at 7.30pm
La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi

In the cultural melting-pot of East London’s galleries, clubs and cafés, burlesque artiste Violetta is the reigning queen, adored by everyone from barristers to baristas.  But she’s hiding a fearful secret.  When she unexpectedly and unconditionally falls for young City trader Al, neither has any idea where it might lead. Especially since Al harbours a secret too...
Verdi’s tragic story of joy, sorrow, passion, regret and undying loyalty is grippingly told in Kit Hesketh-Harvey’s new adaptation.
This updated version has been placed in the heart of East London’s galleries and burlesque clubs in 2012 with a multi cultural cast who themselves reflect the diversity of London today coming from Ireland, Poland, New Zealand, Sweden, Wales and England.  They are talented young singers who have won prizes internationally and whose combined credits include leading roles for Opera Up-Close, Oyster Opera, Garsington Opera, Heritage Opera and Wexford Festival Opera.

Kit Hesketh Harvey is largely known for his work in cabaret and his regular panel appearances on Radio 4’s Just A Minute. Meanwhile his operatic translations have been performed by the Royal Opera House, ENO, Sydney Opera, Scottish Opera and Opera North.  Last year he directed the Merry Opera Company’s widely acclaimed production of Offenbach's La Belle Hélène ('Troy Boy')

He is joined by Stephen Hose as Music Director with whom he enjoyed critical success for their production of Troy Boy (Kit’s adaptation of La Belle Hélène) last year at Upstairs at the Gatehouse and on tour.  They are joined by a number of familiar faces from the Troy Boy cast, and the same band (piano, violin, viola, cello and clarinet) augmented by an accordion.

About The Merry Opera Company
Some people love opera, others have difficulty finding a way in. The Merry Opera Company was set up specifically to delight opera fans and to open a door for newcomers. Moreover, their founder was fed up with falling asleep during the first act of every opera he saw. He is delighted to say that he has not slept for one moment during any of Merry Opera's 120+ performances.
Since 2007, they have been a leading light in producing operas throughout southern England and in Central London. Merry Opera has staged performances in major town theatres, a pub, a school, open-air amphitheatres, churches, shops and the street. In the last five years, they have reached an audience of over 19,000 people.
